The Last of Us Part II
In 2013, Sony developer Naughty Dog released The Last of Us on the PS3 to critical acclaim, millions in sales, and eventually, numerous awards. Set in the near future, The Last of Us tells of a world overrun by a fungal infection that turns its victims into a type of zombie. With the majority of the world’s population infected, society has broken down and the United States has devolved into a series of military-controlled quarantine zones. At the center of the story are Joel, a Texas native now living as a smuggler in a quarantined section of Boston, and Ellie, a 14-year-old girl who was bitten by one of the infected but appears immune to the effects. The two are unwittingly thrust together as Joel attempts to escort Ellie to a rebel lab in the hopes that she might be the key to finding a cure.
With the success of the first title, a sequel was a matter of when not if. The Last of Us Part II was revealed in 2016 with a 4 minute trailer in which Joel and Ellie are in a home filled with blood and bodies and Ellie vows to “kill every last one of them.” The long-awaited sequel was originally scheduled for release on February 21st but was pushed back to May to ensure “Naughty Dog quality.” The game was later delayed again due to the ongoing pandemic but has since been given a June 19th date. While we would all love to be playing the follow up to the original masterpiece, Sony hasn’t left us completely high and dry. Today they released a brand new story trailer showing an older, deadlier, and world-weary Ellie leaving Joel in search of revenge.
